After completing his tenure at the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Derek worked for the State of Texas investigating child abuse and homicide cases. In Montgomery County, he accepted the position of Watch Commander to help improve and modernize their law enforcement agency. After completing that project, Derek finished up his career in active law enforcement as a Sergeant with the Harris County Constable’s office, where he was once again actively involved in accident investigations and reconstruction.

While at the Constable’s office, Derek also helped establish the department’s Police Explorer Post to teach youth ages 14 to 21 about police procedures and participated in Police Explorer competitions statewide.

In 2015, Derek followed his interests in accident injury cases and joined the Attorney Guss team as Chief Investigator. Derek currently holds a Master Peace Officer’s license and has over 2,200 hours of training, including accident investigation and reconstruction for 18-wheelers and other motor vehicles. Derek has also received training in interview and interrogation techniques taught by the FBI. As an investigator, he values the chance to be the key to making a massive, positive difference in someone’s life.

In his spare time, Derek enjoys restoring classic Volkswagen Bugs.
