Xarelto

Helping Victims Injured by Dangerous Drugs

Blood thinners can significantly help certain individuals with heart disease or blood vessel disease prevent life-threatening blood clots, strokes, and heart attacks. For decades, patients requiring anticoagulants have turned to the drug warfarin, which has been on the market since 1954.

However, in 2011, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a new alternative called Xarelto, marketed and sold by Bayer, for conditions such as pulmonary embolism (PE) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Xarelto does not require lifestyle changes and, therefore, was attractive to many patients.

Unfortunately, some individuals taking Xarelto began to experience severe and irreversible side effects, which can be fatal.  The most serious of these side effects are severe internal bleeding, a type of bleeding for which there is no known antidote.  Patients who survive require substantial additional costly medical attention and experience physical and emotional suffering. As a result, Bayer is subject to many lawsuits relating to this drug.

If you suffered injury due to Xarelto, you should not delay in calling qualified attorney Stewart J. Guss as soon as possible.

Injuries sustained by Xarelto users

Xarelto thins the blood and slows coagulation and, therefore, the drug also comes with the potential for uncontrollable bleeding. However, unlike warfarin and other drugs that have been on the market for a long time, medical professionals do not yet know of any antidote for the bleeding caused by Xarelto. Some of the unstoppable side effects that Xarelto users have experienced include as follows:

  • Hemorrhage in the brain
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Bleeding in the intestines and abdomen
  • Damage to the liver
  • Increased infections and complications for patients after knee or hip replacements
  • Blood clots on the spine after spinal injections
  • Serious interactions with other drugs, including NSAIDS
  • Death from uncontrolled bleeding

If the bleeding occurs near a vital organ, the organ can stop functioning properly due to blood deprivation. Patients may also suffer complications from blood pooling inside the body. The FDA has issued several warnings2 regarding these often life-threatening side effects.

If a pharmaceutical company is aware of potentially dangerous side effects of one of its products, it has the duty to properly warn patients so that they can make an educated decision regarding whether to take the drug. Many Xarelto patients, however, claimed they had no knowledge and received no warning of the risks of taking the drug. Many of the lawsuits not only allege that Bayer negligently sold a dangerous product but further failed to adequately warn consumers of the potential for unstoppable side effects with no known antidote.
