What Is an IVC Filter?

An IVC filter is a medical device inserted into the body to prevent blood clots from reaching the lungs. The device itself looks like a small cage—much like an umbrella structure without the fabric. Doctors implant this little cage into the inferior vena cava, the largest vein in the human body, usually by going through the neck or groin.

Once implanted, the IVC filter’s intention is to catch blood clots as they move through the vein. The clot gets caught in the cage while blood can still pass through. With time, the trapped clot should dissipate, no longer posing the threat of reaching the lungs. This type of treatment is common in people with a known history or high risk of developing blood clots, such as after surgeries or bad injuries. Common reasons for IVC filters include:
