Intersection and T-Bone Accidents

T-bone accidents involve a truck driving squarely into the side of another vehicle. They typically happen in intersections—when a big rig is turning left, and you’re moving forward through the intersection. Such accidents can happen anywhere where cars and trucks are turning in and out of entryways and exits—for example, moving in and out of parking lots or driveways or moving in and out of alleys. 18-wheelers travel our roadways to get us the consumer goods we need and want, and as such, they make deliveries that necessitate doing a lot of pulling in and out of places. As professional drivers, truckers must adhere closely to the rules of the road and are held to an even higher standard than we non-commercial drivers are. If a semi T-bones you it is highly likely that the trucker is responsible. The vehicle that’s moving straight ahead has the right of way unless that vehicle is barreling through a red light or a stop sign.

The Statistics

T-bone accidents are common to intersections, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration—in a 2010 report—finds that intersections, though they represent a relatively small percentage of our roads, account for a far greater percentage of accidents on those roads. Intersections are the point of convergence for traffic, and as such, many moving parts are usually in play. Cars and trucks are moving through, turning off of, and turning onto roads, and accidents happen, including exceedingly dangerous T-bone accidents. Drivers, including truck drivers, who engage in illegal maneuvers at intersections—such as jumping yellow left-turn arrows or barreling through red left-turn arrows—are the fourth leading cause of intersection accidents. When you’re traveling through intersections, look alive and watch for big rigs making errant left turns.

Serious Injuries

T-bone truck accidents can cause nearly inestimable damage. Because the side of your car has fewer safety mechanisms in place—such as the trunk at the back and the crumple zone at the front—you’re more susceptible to serious injuries in a T-bone truck accident. While such an accident can cause any number of serious injuries, there are several that are closely associated with these dangerous accidents:

  • Traumatic brain injuries - Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), as the name implies, are injuries to the brain. These serious and seriously unpredictable injuries are typically the result of head trauma—such as can occur in a truck T-bone accident. Because your brain is your body’s command central, a TBI can lead to significant physical, cognitive, sensory, and emotional consequences. Some sufferers even describe a lost sense of self. The emotional component can be even more difficult to overcome than the physical damages.
  • Spinal cord injuries - Spinal cord injuries are injuries to a vertebra, disc, ligament, or the spinal cord itself, and these injuries are extremely painful and serious. Because your spinal cord and your brain, together, form your central nervous system, any injury to your spine can lead to physical issues with bodily movements and sensations. Such injuries can become chronic conditions, and if the injury is serious enough can cause partial or complete paralysis.
  • Broken bones - When a bone breaks or fractures, it is exceedingly painful, and these injuries are slow to heal. Further, if the break doesn’t heal properly, it can lead to chronic health issues and can even become a permanent disability.

Your T-Bone Truck Accident Claim

If a semi-truck has t-boned you, you have no doubt suffered massive damages. To allow yourself the best chance on the road to recovery, it’s critical that your accident claim accurately reflects the full breadth of these damages. There are a variety of sources to consider:

  • Your medical expenses
