Meet Matthew Bonilla

Matthew Bonilla grew up around the legal profession, watching family members use the law to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. From an early age, he admired the way attorneys could help others solve difficult problems and navigate challenging situations. As he considered his own career path, he realized he wanted the same opportunity to build lasting relationships while helping people through some of the most important moments of their lives.

That passion eventually led him to personal injury law, a field that continues to challenge and inspire him every day. For Matthew, one of the most rewarding aspects of personal injury law is that no two cases are ever the same:

“What I enjoy most about personal injury law is that you’re always learning. The law evolves, every case is different, and every client brings a unique set of circumstances. If you want to do right by the people you’re helping, you have to keep learning and keep improving.”

That commitment to continuous learning extends well beyond legal research. Understanding the legal, medical, and personal challenges clients face after an injury allows Matthew to better support the attorneys, staff, and systems that help people navigate the recovery process.

As his career developed, another influence helped shape his approach to leadership and client service: Stewart Guss.

Early in his career, Stewart Guss shared a piece of advice that continues to guide Matthew today: when faced with a difficult decision, make the best decision for everyone involved. Over time, those decisions compound, building both trust and integrity.

Today, as Chief Operating Officer, Matthew helps foster that same culture throughout Trust Guss Injury Lawyers. By supporting the firm’s attorneys, investing in better systems, and continually looking for ways to improve the client experience, he works to ensure every person who turns to Trust Guss feels heard, supported, and cared for from their first call through the resolution of their case.

Matthew’s Leadership Philosophy

Matthew believes trust is the foundation of both strong leadership and exceptional client service. Whether he’s supporting attorneys, mentoring team members, or improving the firm’s processes, his focus remains the same: earning clients’ trust through honesty, consistency, and follow-through.

“Trust is earned through follow-through.”

“If I tell a client I’m going to do something, I’m going to do it. Building that trust is one of the most important parts of serving our clients.”

That philosophy influences every aspect of his work at Trust Guss. By creating an environment centered on communication, accountability, and continuous improvement, Matthew helps ensure the firm’s mission of putting clients first is reflected not only in the outcomes it pursues, but in every interaction along the way.

“The best attorneys never stop learning.”

“It keeps you on your toes. You can’t learn it once and expect to know everything. If you want to do a good job for your clients, you have to keep learning and getting better.”

For Matthew, personal injury law is a field of constant growth. Staying curious and continually improving helps the firm better understand the legal, medical, and personal challenges clients face after an injury.

“Great client service starts with listening.”

“Our clients are often coming to us during one of the most stressful times in their lives. They need to know someone is listening, communicating, and following through.”

Matthew believes every client deserves to feel heard, respected, and supported. That’s why he works to build systems and teams that prioritize responsiveness, transparency, and compassionate service from beginning to end.

Rooted in Houston.
Connected to the Community.

Matthew has called Houston home since moving here to attend law school in 2013, and it’s a city he quickly grew to love.

What stands out most to him is Houston’s diversity. Whether exploring restaurants inside the Loop, spending weekends at the Tomball Farmers Market, walking the trails around Bridgeland and Cypress, or enjoying Vietnamese coffee in Katy Asiatown, Matthew appreciates the many communities and cultures that make Houston unique.

Outside the office, Matthew is an avid sports fan and lifelong animal lover. He shares his home with two dogs, two cats, and hundreds of aquarium fish – a hobby that combines his curiosity, patience, and appreciation for the natural world. He’s also an enthusiastic bird watcher who enjoys exploring Houston’s parks and trail systems to observe the remarkable variety of wildlife that passes through the region each year.

For Matthew, however, it’s the people who make Houston special. He appreciates the city’s welcoming spirit and believes that same sense of kindness and community should be reflected in every client interaction. It’s a philosophy that continues to shape both his leadership and the culture of Trust Guss Injury Lawyers.

Frequently Asked Questions for Matthew

“What motivates me most is knowing the work we do has a real impact on people’s lives. Most of our clients come to us during one of the most difficult times they’ll ever experience, and being able to help them find answers, navigate the legal process, and move forward is incredibly rewarding.

I’m also motivated by building great teams and finding better ways to serve our clients. Every improvement we make – whether it’s through better communication, stronger processes, or new technology – has the potential to make a positive difference for thousands of people over time.”

“Great client service starts with being responsive, patient, and understanding. Our clients are often dealing with pain, uncertainty, and a lot of questions, so they need to know someone is listening and advocating for them.

It also comes down to trust. If you tell a client you’re going to do something, you need to follow through. Clear communication, setting expectations, and doing what you say you will do are the foundation of a strong client relationship.”

“What sets Trust Guss apart is our client-first mindset. It’s one of our core values, and it’s something we work to put into practice every day.

Whether it’s the way we communicate with clients, the compassion we show during difficult moments, or the technology and systems we invest in to make the legal process easier, we’re always asking ourselves one question: How can we do this better for our clients?

I believe that when you truly take care of people, everything else follows.”

“I wish more people understood that the value of a personal injury claim isn’t something to celebrate because it often represents something that was taken away from them.

Many of our clients would gladly trade any settlement if it meant having their health or quality of life back. While financial compensation can provide stability and help hold the responsible party accountable, it can’t undo what happened.

That’s why recovery is about more than resolving a legal claim. It’s about helping people access the resources, support, and guidance they need to move forward.”

“My advice is simple: give us a call.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming they don’t have a case or waiting too long to ask questions. Every situation is different, and the best way to understand your options is to speak with someone who can learn about your circumstances and explain what may be available.

Even if you’re unsure whether you have a claim, a conversation can give you a better understanding of your rights and your next steps.”
